Purpose of the Role

Monitor compliance to relevant legislative and applicable occupational hygiene and ventilation standards, specifications and guidelines and provide input in the design, implementation and maintenance of an effective ventilation system to meet the requirements of effective control within the area of responsibility on surface and underground.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provides technical information to assist in the compilation of budgets.
  • Assists in managing and controlling allocated funds and operates within approved parameters.
  • Analyzes, implements and provides execution tactics for underground Ventilation design and management.
  • Uses materials, equipment, tools, information and energy to turn inputs into outputs (i.e. provide a product or service) along a known pathway. Practical judgement based on knowledge and experience of learned routines is used to overcome obstacles.
  • Ensures underground is supported by modelled and optimised ventilation strategies to deliver primary and secondary ventilation system requirements.
  • Plans, schedules and adequately resources ventilation works to support safe, sustainable and efficient mining operations.
  • Conducts Microclimatic and Macroclimatic airborne pollutant and heat monitoring, interprets the results for remediation and reporting actions.
  • Performs Trackless Mobile Machine (TMM) monitoring for heat emissions, exhaust gas, etc. to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Updates and maintains underground emergency rescue plans.
  • Utilizes systems and processes to ensure systematic and disciplined approach routine measurement and health checks.
  • Maintains a register of fans, fire equipment, instruments and monitoring equipment to ensure control of assets and monitors and coordinates the maintenance the same.
  • Uses Ventsim software to assist in the design and testing of ventilation circuits, short- and medium-term planning, performs simulations for what-if and emergency scenarios, and to assess fan and duct performance.
  • Ensures that legal requirements, Debswana standards and policies are adhered to by:
  • Utilises technical knowledge and observations to influence and direct specific outcomes and uses these to persuade others of the merits of a particular course of action.

Education

  • Minimum Diploma in Mining Engineering /Mechanical Engineering /BSc in Environmental Health /Relevant Discipline.

Experience

2 years working in a Ventilation or Occupational Hygiene field in an underground mining environment.

Legal Certification/Professional Registration

  • Intermediate Certificate: COM Mine Environmental Control (NQF 4 level).
  • The following qualifications will be required for BSc Environmental Health applicants.
